Road Rides

Newport Velo arrange a number of weekly training rides for youth members and parents are encouraged to join, with the main ride on a Saturday after the track session and a Sunday morning.

Starting from the Velodrome there are a number of regular training routes used which you can view on the Garmin ride profiles from below:

The first page will show you the details of the ride, if you press the player button it will show you the ride as it happened.

Preperation:

1. Dress for the conditions - not to much on but be prepared, check the weather forcast the night before. You should be a little cool/cold stood in the carpark before we get going.

2. Practice using your gears, your track bike has one gear, but your parents have been nice to you and you generally have 16-20 gears on your road bikes so get used to using them. Remember they're there to make your ride easier.

 3. Practise drinking from a bottle whilst on the bike. Being hydrated will help with both your performance an concentration.

4. Make sure your gears, saddle height etc are right. Give mum and dad a heads up if anything isn't working. Its no good expecting them to sort your bike out on a Saturday evening for Sunday. If they're not sure what is wrong please feel free to speak to Bryan or myself about sorting it out on a Saturday.

 5. If you don't own a road bike or your bike is off the road for any reason speak to one of the coaches on a Saturday to see if we can sort sizing a club road bike for you to use on a ride by ride basis.

Our aim as a club on the rides, is to stretch you in terms of fitness and skill levels, but to ensure you enjoy the experiences of riding with Newport Velo.

With xmas coming up take the opportunity to get yourself kitted out with Newport Velo leg/armwarmers, rain jackets, cycling glasses etc so you can ride in comfort over the winter months. Again you don't need to spend a futune on kit, Diane Marshall has a lot of club kit which will meet most of your needs and speak to the coaches if you need any advice.

Look forward to seeing you on the next ride,
